Grace Riza Ti Kieng

Originally from the Philippines with Filipino-Chinese roots, Grace relocated to Toronto, Canada, with her family in 1997. Here, she pursued her passion for art. Her story reflects her path towards mental health and well-being. Professionally, she’s served as an administrative secretary in geriatric mental health services for over a decade. Painting remains a personal hobby of hers, and to date, she has created over 70 artworks.

 

What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“I moved with my family to Toronto, Canada, in 1997. Here, I have been following my passion for art. As a single mother, my daughter Emma-Dior, a teenager, has inspired my artistic endeavors. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, I embraced painting as a serious pursuit, finding it a therapeutic means to cope with my fibromyalgia and PTSD. This narrative is a testament to my journey towards mental health and well-being.”

What inspires you?

“I find inspiration in a variety of artists on Instagram, especially those who engage in different mediums, like Callen Shaub, Melyna Leclerc, and the creator of Mii Paintings.”

What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?

“The theme of the Four Seasons has had a profound impact on my artistic expression. It’s important to remember that the journey towards healing is not always a linear path and can be easily obscured. The goal of transforming the narrative around mental health stigma. My aim is to inspire those who feel isolated and forgotten.”

How would you describe your work?

“My abstract creations are dynamic and richly textured, using a mixed media method that incorporates a pouring technique to merge with paint, acrylics, dried flowers, leaves, and glitter, bestowing upon them a three-dimensional quality.”

Which artists influence you most?

“Callen Shaub influenced me the most because of his unique technique in producing art that breaks barriers. Despite of his formal art education and training, he didn’t follow the norm but expresses his ‘Fake Art’ authentically.”

What is your creative process like?

“My creative process begins with a blank canvas, which I cover entirely with a base color chosen from shades of blue, green, yellow, or orange. When opting for a marbling effect, I employ the pouring method, blending acrylics and paint, then using a blow dryer to create the desired texture and image.”

What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?

“The role of an artist in society is crucial as it allows others to view their mental health and wellness journey through the prism of creativity. With the advancement of technology, artists are also adjusting and embracing digital platforms to show their artwork and convey their unique perspectives.”
