Interview
Caglar Ekici
Caglar was born in Turkey in 1989. His interest in art began during his high school years, starting with music. Throughout this journey, Caglar discovered tattoo art, which eventually led him to focus on tattooing. Now, he lives in the United States, and his art style is graffiti realism.
What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?
“My interest in art started in high school with music, and during that time, I got introduced to tattoo art. Eventually, my connection to art evolved, and I focused on tattooing. Every moment in this journey has been a part of my artistic path.”
What does your work aim to say? Does it comment on any current social or political issues?
“My work focuses on colors and chaos, combining abstract effects with realism in a style referred to as avant-garde. The point where I established my own style is by mixing abstract effects with graffiti influences, aiming to reflect the coolest form of chaos to tattoo lovers, all while incorporating elements of street culture with modern influences. I don’t personally include concepts like politics in my style, but if a client requests a specific concept, then I would probably consider doing it.”
Do you plan your work in advance, or is it improvisation?
“I definitely plan everything in advance; the entire process can take several days. The area where the tattoo will be placed is designed considering the muscle measurements and bone anatomy, using appropriate decorative measurements. A suitable concept is then created as a digital or conventional drawing, and only after achieving a 100% match, we move on to the second stage, which is the tattooing process.”
“I would like to thank my beloved wife, Vanessa, who has always been by my side throughout my career.”
Are there any art world trends you are following?
“I’m interested in all art trends that express themselves through colors, and all these trends expand my horizons. In fact, a part of my work definitely involves the dynamics created by trends. In some of my designs, I can synthesize the classic realism of the 19th century with today’s WhatsApp emojis or Warner Bros characters, and honestly, it's a lot of fun!”
What process, materials and techniques do you use to create your artwork?
“Tattoo art carries deep thought and processes behind each design. First, I identify my source of inspiration, which can come from nature, mythology, or personal stories. Then, I move on to the design phase, usually starting with sketches on paper and then detailing them in a digital format. My choice of materials is also very important. Using high-quality inks and sterile needles allows me to prioritize both my art and my client's health. Technically, I create a unique style by blending different tattoo styles - whether it's classic, traditional, watercolor, or geometric patterns. Every tattoo should tell a story and establish a deep connection with the person wearing it. Feeling the spirit of street culture while tattooing is crucial for me. Each session feels like a live performance. The materials I use are just as special; every needle and ink defines a tattoo artist's identity. Working with quality materials is essential to protect both my art and my client’s skin. But the real focus is capturing the meaning of that tattoo; I’m not just an artist; I’m also a storyteller. Finally, during the application, I stay in constant communication with my client to understand their feelings and expectations. This transforms each tattoo session into a collaborative process. My art is not just an image; it’s a journey to create an experience, an emotion, and a lasting memory.”
What does your art mean to you?
“Art, for me, is the realization of a vision. Each tattoo is not just a design; it’s a lifestyle, a way of thinking, and an explosion of emotion. Telling a story on the skin and creating a world in the viewer's eyes forms the foundation of my art. Tattooing means witnessing people's inner journeys. Each drawing reflects the identity, dreams, and struggles of the individual—a mirror of their essence. In this context, art is a tool for communication; it helps people express their feelings and experiences. My vision is to move away from the ordinary and provoke thought and emotion with each tattoo. Every piece, where colors, textures, and forms come together, contains its own universe. This is not just a tattoo; it’s an experience, a connection, and an expression of freedom. My art etches the energy and freedom of the streets into the skin. But honestly, when I turn inward and ask myself what my art means to me, I think the answer would be ego, because: ‘True art is the expression of a soul dancing to the melody of the ego; don’t be afraid to play your own note.’”
