Interview

Andy Cline

Born and raised in Homer, Alaska, Andy Cline spent his most influential and formative years in an environment where nature clearly served as one’s teacher, guide, and wondrously powerful provider. The wilderness was a constant adventure and inspiring force for Cline, teaching him the profound lesson that all of life’s necessities, both tangible and intangible, can be derived directly from the natural world. This lesson became the foundation of Cline’s passions and a catalyst for his creative work.

What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“I began with a fascination of organic wilderness and the forces of nature that create such raw penetrating beauty. My journey has been full of pushing boundaries of what fine art furniture can be while merging balanced abstract concepts with my ethos of nature driven vibrancy.”

What inspires you?

“Wind, snowstorms, patterns in the sand and in moving water, cloud patterns in the sky juxtaposed within an alpenglow sunset, characteristics of ice and fog, the lush tranquil vibrancy of spring colors and the massive force of lava.”

What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?

“My themes stick to the incredible chatoyancy of exotic woods- local and up-cycled trees. Reverent adherence to natures voice thru explosive grain or epoxy flow. The underlying message being treasured renaissance of museum grade quality. Truly one of a kind sculpture.”

How would you describe your work?

“Alluring tranquility. One of a kind. Passion Driven. High integrity, both artistically and structurally. Functional. Client immersive. Identifiable. Collectible. Visually magnetic, striking, bold and unique.”

Which artists influence you most?

“Andy Goldsworthy, Dale Chihuly, M C Escher, Salvador Dali, Sam Maloof, Antoni Gaudi and Theodor Seuss Geisel.”

“My themes stick to the incredible chatoyancy of exotic woods- local and up-cycled trees.”

What is your creative process like?

“It starts at an uncontrollable excitement and obsessed inspiration, then continues through layout, conceptualization mental and physical marination, milling and refinement. Then, the build ends with manicure and polish and ceremonial unveiling augmented through physical and visual enjoyment.”

What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?

“An artist’s role is to share their unique flavor with the world so as to evoke a visceral connection with their audience. This has always evolved and remains a truly timeless quality by staying true to core beliefs of artist originality and ferocious independence from convention.”

Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?

“I was featured in the reno tahoe international art show, it was an amazing pairing with original works by Jackson Pollock.”
